What Is a U Purlin?
A U purlin (also called a U profile or cold-formed U channel) is an open steel section with a flat web and two parallel flanges and no return lips. Sarir Sanat Amir produces U purlins by slitting steel coil into strips of the required width and then cold roll forming them into the final U shape. Because the section is formed cold from sheet, the dimensions can be set to the needs of each project instead of being limited to a fixed catalogue of hot-rolled sizes.
Technical Specifications
- Production method: slitting and roll forming
- Raw material: hot-rolled, cold-rolled and galvanized sheet
- Sheet grades: EN 10025 (S235JR / S275JR / S355JR), DIN 17100 (RSt37-2 / St44 / St52 / St12), EN 10346 (DX51D), JIS G 3302 (SGCC)
- Thickness: 1 to 4.5 mm
- Web width: 50 to 450 mm
- Flange: 25 to 150 mm
- Length: up to 13 meters, with a length tolerance of ±1 mm
- Punching: round and elongated (slotted) holes, positioned according to the customer drawing
Advantages of Cold-Formed U Profiles
- High strength-to-weight ratio: the section carries load efficiently while using less steel than a heavier hot-rolled channel of similar size.
- Custom dimensions: web, flange, thickness and length are produced to order, which reduces cutting and waste on site.
- Accurate, repeatable geometry: roll forming keeps the cross-section consistent along the full length, which makes bolted connections fit correctly.
- Pre-punched for fast installation: holes are punched in the factory, so members can be bolted together on site without drilling.
- Corrosion protection options: using galvanized sheet (DX51D / SGCC) gives a protected profile for outdoor and solar applications.
Applications
U purlins are used in the building industry, in shed and warehouse construction, in solar mounting systems for photovoltaic panels, and in machinery manufacturing. In light and medium-weight steel structures they serve as secondary members, frames, rails and supports wherever a simple, easily bolted section is needed.
U Purlin vs. C and Z Purlins
The main difference is the lip. A C purlin has short return lips on its flanges that stiffen the section, while a U purlin has plain flanges, which makes it simpler to nest, connect and use as a track or frame member. A Z purlin has flanges pointing in opposite directions, so Z sections can be lapped over supports in continuous roof and wall spans. The right choice depends on the span, the load and the connection details of the structure.
How to Order
To receive a quotation, send us the web width, flange size, thickness, sheet type (hot-rolled, cold-rolled or galvanized), length, punching drawing and the quantity required. Prices depend on these specifications and on the current steel market. Please contact Sarir Sanat Amir for technical advice and pricing.
